Why we are always striving for something new and not re-using what we already have?
I utilise my skills and experience as a cabinet maker to make something new from something old. These novel and aesthetically pleasing objects are generated from wood off-cuts and waste. I see these cast-offs in a new light, and try to extend its life, which might mean re-purposing it.
I’ve grown a fascination with using things up & find myself viewing material in a new light with an abundant potential. From this potential & very broad scope I gain a lot of enjoyment from planning & executing the work. In many cases the pieces that I create will have a life that will extend way beyond that of my own.
In a world of choice, the limitation of using what is cheap, readily available & sustainable is liberating. Finding use where it is not necessarily obvious. The works are also nostalgic visions in a world of throwaway excess and economic efficiency gone awry.
Since finishing my degree last year in Design and visual art I have exhibited my work at numerous galleries in Auckland. Object space, Depot Artspace and The Vivian.
