Lucy Gauntlett
Artist | Auckland
Lucy picked up a camera for the first time for a University project while studying architecture and hasn’t looked back since. In the past few years she’s developed swiftly from newbie to becoming a Master member of the New Zealand Institute of Professional Photography, and last year picked up the prestigious Creative New Zealand Photography Award in the Epson/NZIPP Professional Photography Awards.
Lucy also works full-time as an architect. Her photographic artworks express layers of meaning by taking a simple image that’s then explored, rearranged and enriched with graphic flourishes to make something entirely new:
“The most enjoyable thing about photography is coming across something breath-taking and you just know the photograph is going to be amazing – it doesn’t happen that often, but when it does it’s very exciting. But then, I also love getting completely absorbed in the process of drawing and working with the image on the computer. Time just disappears- it’s really cool!”
