Toy Designer - Auckland
Gaby Suhl is the creative behind the Golly Family. She's always had a fascination with toys due to her inventive grandmother. Says Gaby: "I remember my grandmother sitting behind the sewing machine for hours creating all these wonderful dolls for me. Golly Family has been created to bring those memories to life. I would love children to have a toy that was created with as much love as my grandmother has put into mine ones."
She decided to quit her corporate job to start creating her own brand. Says Gaby: "I wanted to make toys with personality, toys that had a little story behind them." Hector, the beetroot loving bunny was created soon after. The idea of the books came a few months later. "I wanted the toys to have some history before they got to the children’s hands so I thought that if I took the toys travelling to different places and took photos of them, they would soon have a 'previous life'.”
Each of the toys will eventually have a book made in a different country. The idea behind the book is that children need to find their character hidden in each of the photos in the book. It helps them develop their spatial awareness and also see different places they may or may not have visited before. The first trial of the book was made in Auckland with Hugo, the cat. However the first official book will be released in February with Miranda, the hypochondriac sheep travelling all around New Zealand.
"My best friends at the moment are my sewing machine and my camera. They are the true stars behind the Golly Family products.”
