Homeware Designer - Auckland
Christopher Metcalfe is a busy man. After weeks of trying, we were lucky to catch him over coffee to find out about his background and what he’s been up to lately. Talking a mile a minute and pausing only to illustrate his thoughts in the black sketchbook he always carries, he rattles off the events that led him from woodwork class at Te Awamutu College, to exhibiting last year at New York’s prestigious International Contemporary Furniture Fair.
Milestones include being finalist in the Dyson Product Design Awards and co-winner of the Student Products category at 07’s BeST Design Awards. Fizzing at the bung with new ideas, it’s easy to see how this young designer has achieved success so quickly.
Christopher Metcalfe’s work combines old-fashioned Kiwi ingenuity with the latest technology to create innovative, fun and attractive products. Woodwork, nature and architecture inspire the shapes, but producing them is made possible only with the precision that computer-aided design and the latest laser cutting technology allow. The results so far include the super-innovative Bol ‘interactive’ fruit bowls.
Available in sustainable hoop pine ply or translucent polycarbonate colours, these funky bowls are truly unique with an elaborate and elegant expanding form. Also available now is the Lattice Platter. Flat-packed for you to assemble, it’s just the first in a series of laser–cut ply creations that Christopher Metcalfe is developing, so watch this space for more…
